Keep your Holidays Safe
|
|
The holidays are upon us. This is a time to celebrate
and enjoy the company of family and friends. However, it is also a prime
time for residential fires. Follow these helpful hints for having a safe
and happy holiday season:
1. Buy fire-safe toys - Avoid toys made of highly flammable materials
and make sure electric toys have the label of an independent testing
laboratory.
2. Give space heaters room - Keep space heaters at least 3 feet away
from furniture, bedding, walls, clothing and other things that can burn.
Use the proper fuel for liquid-fueled heaters, be sure they are vented
properly, and refill them only in well-ventilated areas and when they
are cool.
3. Holiday lights - Throw away sets of lights with cracked or frayed
cords or loose or damaged sockets. Don’t overload electrical outlets or
run extension cords under carpets, across doorways or near heaters. Be
sure extension cords aren’t pinched behind or under furniture. Unplug
all decorative lights before leaving your home or going to bed. Never
use electric lights on a metal Christmas tree.
4. Holiday party safety - Use flame retardant or noncombustible
materials for costumes and decorations. Use chafing dishes with caution.
Provide smokers with a large, deep, non-tip ashtray.
