Protect Yourself Against Identity Theft

What is Identity Theft?
The fastest growing crime in America today is Identity Theft, a crime that millions of Americans fall victim to each year. Identity Theft occurs when a thief uses a person's charge accounts to make unapproved purchases or uses personal information, such as a social security number, to open new accounts without the victim’s knowledge. They can then incur hundreds or even thousands of dollars in credit card charges, fraudulent loans and more.

Often a victim is unaware of these charges until a merchant or credit card company seeks payment or the consumer may be denied a loan because of a poor credit score. Though consumers who have had their identity stolen are not liable for all the fraudulent charges that are incurred, they are often left with bad credit histories that require a lot of time and money to restore.

What's the Good News?
Through Brownell Insurance Center, Inc. you can get the Identity Theft and Credit Protection Coverage you need as part of your homeowners policy. Call us today to find out about this important coverage.

If your identity has already been stolen follow these 4 steps:
1) Contact the fraud departments of any one of the three consumer reporting companies to place a fraud alert on your credit report.
2) Close the accounts that you know or believe have been tampered with or opened fraudulently.
3) File a report with your local police or the police in the community where the identity theft took place.
4) File your complaint with the FTC. The FTC maintains a database of identity theft cases used by law enforcement agencies for investigations.
